In a joint statement — released after Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to Pakistan, who today traveled to Sri Lanka, the next leg of his trip — both governments called on the United Nations Security Council to “restrain the Israeli regime from its adventurism in the region and its illegal acts, attacking its neighbors and targeting foreign diplomatic missions.”

According to Pakistan’s foreign ministry, both countries “expressed their strong and unequivocal condemnation of the continued aggression and atrocities by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people, including the inhuman blockade of Gaza, which has resulted in widespread death and destruction and the displacement of millions of Palestinians.”

They advocated for the need for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access to the besieged people of Gaza, the return of displaced Palestinians, and ensuring accountability for the crimes committed by the Israeli regime.”

The joint statement is the result of Raisi’s three-day visit to Pakistan, in an attempt to improve diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries after they exchanged military strikes last January.

The visit took place at a time of high tension in the Middle East, after Iran launched a massive attack with more than 300 drones and missiles against Israeli territory last weekend, in retaliation for the bombing, attributed to Israel, of the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1.

In the statement released today, this attack is labeled as an “unacceptable violation” of international law and the United Nations Charter, being illegal in light of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
