"It is in our DNA to fight against extremes, against the extreme right and against populists," said Hayer, in an interview with Lusa and other European agencies, within the scope of the European Newsroom project, in Strasbourg (France), where the Eurochamber is based.

"Therefore, Renew's fight for Europe is also a fight against populists and the extreme right and we are working hard," he said, also expressing confidence in a good result for the liberals of the European Union (EU), anticipating that this group will continue to be a 'kingmaker', that is, to have political weight (in the current legislature it is the third largest group, with 102 MEPs), he stressed.

Valérie Hayer, who is also president of Renew Europe, also stressed that both she and the other candidates from the group's parties have found a dynamic favorable to the liberal family, hoping to maintain the absolute majority they hold together with the two largest political forces: the European People's Party (PPE - including the PSD and CDS) and the Socialists and Democrats (S&D, which includes the PS).

In the interview given during the last plenary session of the current legislature, the French MEP guarantees that any negotiation with the family of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) is "out of the question", given that it includes "elected members of the extreme right", namely from the Brothers of Italy party, which leads the government in the country.

"Spitzenkandidat" is the German term for the main candidate and, in the EU context, refers to the main candidate (the list leader) of a European political party for president of the European Commission.

The elections for the European Parliament will take place between June 6th and 9th, with the latter being the day when the Portuguese choose their 21 representatives at the polls.
