Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) spokesman Doh Taw Nee told Spanish news agency EFE that the guerrillas had made a "strategic decision to temporarily withdraw" from Myawaddy, which is separated by the Moei River from the Thai town of Mae Sot, a major border crossing between the two countries.

The town had been taken by KNLA fighters two weeks ago.

The KNLA withdrawal came after the military, which has ruled Myanmar since a February 2021 coup, retook a military base on the outskirts of the town on Tuesday.

"Our fight against the dictatorship goes beyond Myawaddy. Our aim is to eradicate all forms of dictatorship nationwide," Doh Taw Nee said in an audio message sent to EFE.

The junta, which has mounted a counteroffensive to retake Myawaddy, was able to enter the area with the help of a local militia that had defected when the KNLA overran the town in early April, the source said.

Fighting between the military and the rebels has "raised concerns" for the Thai government, which has deployed troops to secure the border and warned that it will not allow military aircraft to fly over Thai territory.

Thousands of people crossed into Thailand to escape the fighting following the junta's counteroffensive, although most have since returned home, according to Thailand's foreign ministry.

Myanmar's military takeover has deepened the country's political, social and economic crisis, triggering widespread violence.
