"Let us pray for the Middle East, for Gaza, where there is so much suffering, and for peace between Palestine and Israel, so that they may be two free States with good relations," the Pope said.

The Vatican has always defended a two-State solution for Palestine and Israel and a special statute for the city of Jerusalem.

Francis reiterated his appeals for peace to be achieved between Palestine and Israel, but also remembered "martyred Ukraine" and "all the young soldiers who are dying", also recalling the conflict in Myanmar and other wars in the world.

"War is always a defeat and the ones who win are the weapons manufacturers," the Pope said.
