"Timor-Leste closely follows the developments in the Middle East with deep concern and firmly supports the two-state solution to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", the Timorese Government refers in a statement.

The executive emphasizes that the country "supports the right of the peoples of Palestine and Israel to live side by side in peace, with dignity and security" and the importance of respecting the "sovereignty and independence of all States".

"We reiterate our dedication to promoting dialogue, diplomacy and multilateral cooperation as a means to solve disputes and maintain global peace and security", the statement refers.

In the statement, the Timorese Government also said it is ready to "support initiatives that defend the principles of the United Nations Charter and contribute to a world where conflicts are solved through peaceful means, according to international law and the values of the United Nations".

The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas was triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist group on Israeli soil, on 7 October 2023, which caused about 1,200 deaths and over two hundred hostages, according to Israeli authorities.

In retaliation, Israel launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip that has already caused over 34 thousand deaths, according to Hamas, which has controlled the territory since 2007.
