According to the population, the shootings between the parties lasted for about ten hours, having started at around 05:00 (04:00 in Lisbon).

"The Local Force did engage in a heavy battle in Chai, it fought hard against the terrorists, the situation affected the traffic," said a source from Macomia.

There is no information on deaths between the parties, but the same sources told Lusa that local traffic was affected, with some light and heavy vehicles that left the northern districts, such as Mueda, Muidumbe, Mocímboa da Praia, Nanagade and Palma, having retreated to await the restoration of security conditions on National Road 380 (N380), or using alternative routes.

"My brother and other people left Mueda, hitched a ride to come here, but when they arrived in the village of Litamanda they realized that the situation was not good in the administrative post of Chai, so they retreated to Mueda," reported another source.

Considered the historical place where the armed struggle for the liberation of Mozambique began, the administrative post of Chai belongs to the central district of Macomia, in the province of Cabo Delgado, located along the N380, one of the few asphalted roads in the region.

Since October 2017, the province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed insurgency with attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.

After several months of relative normality in the affected districts, the province of Cabo Delgado has registered, in recent months, new movements and attacks by rebel groups, which have limited movement to some points on the few asphalted roads that give access to several districts.

The insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021, with the support of Rwanda, with more than 2,000 soldiers, and the Southern African Development Community, liberating districts next to the natural gas projects.
