Richard Walker, the chief executive of British supermarket chain Iceland, has thanked St John Ambulance paramedics for "saving his life" after he collapsed during the London Marathon on Sunday.

Walker was running alongside fellow Iceland boss Simon Felstead to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK when he collapsed and "lost consciousness" just two miles from the finish line, he said on social media.

"Yesterday [Sunday] St John Ambulance saved my life. I collapsed and was unconscious less than two miles from the London Marathon finish line with heat exhaustion - core temp 42 and rising," he wrote on Instagram on Monday.

The businessman admitted he had not trained "nearly enough" and "pushed myself too hard" on the day. He only regained consciousness around half an hour later after being "surrounded by an amazing medical team" and "covered in ice packs".

"I cannot thank them enough. They were the true heroes of the day and I owe them my life," he said.

More than 50,000 people took part in the London Marathon on Sunday, including politicians and celebrities.
