According to the same source, both were arrested "in flagrante delicto" in March 2023, in the village of Mocímboa da Praia, in possession of 885,500 meticais (13 thousand euros) and "various foodstuffs that were intended to guarantee the sustainability of a terrorist group, which was camped in Cabo Delgado".

The Central Office for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT) instituted criminal proceedings against the two citizens and, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the investigation "found that the defendants, in addition to buying food, acquired SIM cards, mobile phone operator recharge coupons and sent them to the leader of the terrorist group".

"Who, in turn, proceeded to distribute them to the other members, to ensure communications, internet, as well as money transactions, using mobile wallets, for the members of the group and the support of their families", added the source.

"The SIM cards, after being used, were destroyed, as a way of erasing the traces and escaping the action of Justice and with the money they acquired information, intended for the leader of the terrorist group, about the location, movement and position of the Defense and Security Forces", continued the source, adding that, after the investigation, the indictment was filed and the case sent to the Judicial Court of the Province of Cabo Delgado, on April 22, with the two defendants arrested.

"Against the defendants, the case sufficiently indicates the practice of crimes of financing terrorism, gathering information, joining a terrorist organization and criminal association", concluded the source.

The province has been facing an armed insurgency for six years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.

The insurgency, which since December 2023 has intensified again with several attacks on populations and armed forces, led to a military response since July 2021, with the initial support of Rwanda, with more than 2,000 soldiers, and from southern African countries, liberating districts next to the gas projects.
