In early 2024, in addition to the sister of the deposed President Ali Bongo, the French engineering company Egis and three of its former executives, as well as Gabonese businessman Franck Ping and lawyer Danyèle Palazo-Gauthier, were brought to court. They were all acquitted.
Pascaline Bongo, who pleaded not guilty, was suspected of having agreed to intervene on behalf of Egis Route in the awarding of public contracts, in exchange for the promise of eight million euros in bribes.
The court ruled that, in her capacity as high personal representative of the President of the Republic at the time, "she had no authority to award the contract" in question and that, "at most, her functions and her fraternal proximity, real or supposed, with the President of the Republic could have allowed her to use her influence".
However, "there is nothing in the case to show that this was the case and, above all, the crime of influence peddling by a foreign public official did not exist at the time of the events," the president explained in her judgment.
"It is reassuring that the court has made a fair assessment of the situation and has overcome the reasons of convenience that led the Public Prosecutor's Office to refer her to the court. This is a victory for the law," praised Pascaline Bongo's lawyer, Corinne Dreyfus-Schmidt.
