Pyongyang "fired an unidentified projectile into the East Sea," the name given by the two Koreas to the Sea of Japan, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said, adding that it was analyzing the launch, including the distance the projectile flew.
Japan's Defense Ministry also said it had detected a "possible ballistic missile launch" by North Korea, and was gathering information on whether it posed a threat to the archipelago.
Japanese government sources, cited by the EFE news agency, said the projectile had already fallen into waters outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone at around 3:15 p.m. (7:15 a.m. in Lisbon).
Pyongyang has so far made no comment on this alleged launch.
On Saturday, North Korea had announced that it had tested a "very large" warhead designed for cruise missiles, such as the Hwasal-1 Ra-3, and a new type of anti-aircraft missile, Pyoljji-1-2, according to the North Korean state agency KCNA.
Earlier this month, Pyongyang said it had tested a new medium-to-long-range solid-fuel hypersonic missile.
North Korea continues to develop weapons programs, including nuclear, despite international sanctions in force.
Since the beginning of the year, the country has defined South Korea as its "main enemy," closed agencies dedicated to reunification and inter-Korean dialogue and threatened to go to war over any violation of North Korean territory.
