Baby pulled alive from womb of mother killed in Gaza airstrike

A newborn Palestinian girl was pulled alive from the womb of her mother, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah before dawn Saturday, killing 13 people, including nine children.

The pregnant mother, Sabreen Al-Sheikh, was killed along with her husband, Shokri, and her daughter, Malak.

Medical crews managed to save the baby girl, who was delivered by Caesarean section, the U.S. news agency Associated Press reported, citing the Kuwaiti hospital where the bodies were taken.

The baby is now in an incubator in the al-Amiri hospital in Rafah, the picture showed.

Rafah, where more than half of Gaza's 2.3 million population has sought refuge from the fighting elsewhere, has been hit by daily airstrikes.

The war between Israel and Hamas has killed more than 34,000 people in Gaza, according to local health officials, devastated the territory's two largest cities and left a trail of destruction from north to south.

About 80 percent of the population has fled their homes elsewhere in the blockaded coastal enclave, which aid workers say is on the brink of famine.

Israel blames Hamas for the civilian deaths, saying the militants operate in densely populated residential areas, but the military rarely comments on individual strikes, which often kill women and children.

The Israeli military says it has killed more than 13,000 Hamas fighters, a claim it has not substantiated.

The conflict, now in its seventh month, has stirred regional tensions pitting Israel and the United States against Iran and allied militant groups across the Middle East.

The current war was triggered by an unprecedented rocket attack by Hamas on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and took 250 hostage.

Israel says the militants are still holding about 100 hostages and the remains of more than 30.
