Twelve of the 15 member countries of the Security Council voted in favor of completing the integration of Palestine into the United Nations, but the proposal was rejected with two abstentions and a vote against by the United States of America, which again used its right to veto.
The Israeli government announced today that it will present a protest to the embassies of the countries that voted in favor of the Algerian proposal that would improve the status of the Palestinians, who have had the status of "non-member observer state" since 2012. "The ambassadors of France, Japan, South Korea, Malta, the Slovak Republic and Ecuador will be summoned tomorrow" and "a strong protest will be expressed to them," the Israeli ministry stated on its social network X, quoted by the Agence France-Presse news agency. According to the ministry, the message to the ambassadors is the following: "A political gesture towards the Palestinians and a call for the recognition of a Palestinian State - six months after the massacre of October 7 - is a reward for terrorism." "Israel will not accept the creation of a terrorist state that endangers its citizens," the minister added on the social network. For several weeks, the Palestinians and Arab countries have asked the Security Council to accept that a Palestinian State, which is already recognized by most capitals, take a "legitimate place" in the UN. The proposal ended up being rejected with the US veto, an attitude already condemned by the president of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Mahmoud Abbas, who saw the action as "a flagrant aggression against the rights, history and homeland" of the Palestinian people, adding that the US administration "defies the will of the international community." For the PA leader, Washington's position represents the "abandonment of all promises" regarding the two-state solution, as a formula for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. In addition, he criticized Washington for turning a blind eye to the "theft of funds" from the territory by the Israeli authorities, which ends up weakening the PA, and accused: "It gives Israel weapons and money that kill our children and destroy our homes."
