Iran orders US to pay $1bn for backing shah's regime
An Iranian court has ordered the United States to pay more than $1 billion (938 million euros) "for supporting the crimes of the monarchical regime" of the Shah Pahlavi, who ruled the country until the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

The Mizan news agency, which is run by Iran's judiciary, reported on Tuesday that after investigating the claims of 15 political prisoners, Branch 55 of Tehran's General and Criminal Court has ruled that Washington should pay $109.1 million in "compensatory, punitive, and moral damages" for its support of the regime of Iran's last monarch, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
"The US government, while fully aware of the Pahlavi dictatorial regime's inhumane crimes against the Iranian nation, presented the plan to establish SAVAK to the Pahlavi regime," the Mizan news agency reported, referring to the era's secret police and national security service, which US officials are accused of helping to develop.
According to the court, the plaintiffs "were arrested by SAVAK and subjected to years of inhumane torture due to their opposition to the Shah's regime, as a result of which they suffered severe physical, mental and emotional injuries."
The verdict joins a number of other rulings by Iranian courts against the US government or American individuals over alleged crimes against the Islamic Republic.
The most high-profile recent case was the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani, the former head of Iran's Quds Force, who was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq in 2020.
Last December, an Iranian court ordered Washington and 41 other US entities and individuals to pay $49.7 billion (€46.6 billion) over Soleimani's killing.
The Iranian court rulings against the US are largely seen as symbolic, as Tehran has not been able to collect any of the awarded damages.
