Bissau, Apr 19, 2024 (Lusa) -- The Guinean Government today created a commission with several ministers to mediate the conflicting parties and restore peace in Djaal, a community near Bissau, which has been the scene of clashes between villagers over land ownership.

The decision was made at an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Government announced in a statement.

One person died and several others were injured in clashes on Thursday between villagers in Djaal, a community inhabited mostly by individuals from the Balanta and Pepel ethnic groups, Lieutenant-Colonel António Correia of the Public Order Police (POP) announced today.

The Guinean Minister of the Interior and Public Order, Botche Candé, went to the scene and gave orders for the police to maintain a security force in the area to prevent further clashes.

The two ethnic groups have always coexisted peacefully in Djaal, but in recent years they have accused each other of illegal occupation of land and of stealing cattle.

In early March, clashes occurred between individuals from the two ethnic groups. At the time, two people were seriously injured.

A new clash occurred in the community last Thursday, with villagers using knives, sticks and even firearms, according to the POP.

"On the minister's orders, 61 people" suspected of direct involvement in the clashes were brought to Bissau, António Correia announced today.

The Government does not rule out the possibility of transferring the seriously injured from Thursday's clashes abroad, if that is the medical indication, Correia said, speaking of people receiving assistance in Bissau hospitals.
