"At around 02:55 (00:55 in Lisbon), the Israeli enemy carried out a missile aggression (...) targeting our air defense sites in the southern region," the Syrian Defense Ministry said in a statement, adding that only material damage had been caused.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported "Israeli strikes targeting a Syrian army radar position in Daraa province, which had detected the entry of Israeli planes" into the country's airspace.

The director of this non-governmental organization based in the United Kingdom, which has a vast network of sources in Syria, Rami Abdel Rahmane, said that the attacks occurred "at a time when Israeli aircraft were flying over the Daraa region, without the anti-aircraft defenses entering into action."

Israeli forces have carried out hundreds of attacks in Syria since the start of the war in 2011 in the neighboring country, particularly targeting pro-Iranian groups.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned "in the strongest terms" today's attack attributed to Israel and those that preceded it on its territory.

Syria also called on the international community and the United Nations "to take all deterrent measures to put an end" to the Israeli attacks, according to a statement from Damascus diplomacy.

The latest attacks come as loud explosions were reported this morning in central Iran.

Israel has warned that it would retaliate after Iran fired hundreds of missiles and 'drones' at Israeli territory last weekend.

This unprecedented attack followed a bombing of the Iranian Consulate in Damascus, attributed to Israel.

The attack destroyed the Iranian consulate on April 1 and killed 16 people, including seven members of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, including two senior officers.
