Nowadays, with so many streaming services available, it has become common to binge-watch TV series as soon as they are released. It seems like a harmless habit, but in reality, it has some negative effects on our health. Mike Kocsis, a hormone specialist, quoted by the blog aggregator Huffpost, explains everything.

According to the specialist, "the symptoms of fear or excitement mirror each other. As a result, the body reacts to watching dramas and thrillers in the same way it reacts when you are in love".

He also explained that "heart rate increases by 42%, blood pressure goes up and blood flow to the gut decreases when the body experiences these intense emotions".

When this happens, "the sympathetic nervous system triggers a stress response that prompts the body to prepare for a threat", he adds.

When the body finally realizes that "it is not under threat and, in this case, watching television, the brain releases a dose of dopamine". "Dopamine is a neurotransmitter secreted by the hypothalamus of the brain" and "the sudden release of dopamine is the reason why we binge-watch TV shows, since its effect causes a feeling of euphoria".

All "this even makes us crave the TV show, like an addiction, when we change the channel or turn it off". He also explains that watching television for a long time can "tamper with testosterone levels".

Usually, "most people are completely inactive while watching television, focusing only on the blue light emitted by the screen". And, of course, "blue light suppresses the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin, tricking the brain into thinking it is still daytime and therefore delaying sleep", warns the specialist.

Therefore, if you "feel tired, moody or even anxious after watching television for a long time, implement a nightly TV curfew and make sure you are mindful of how many hours you watch".
