"This Lusophone space is a reference in international contacts, because in the visits of ambassadors and [of officials from] foreign countries, they always have the reference not only to Portugal, which is a small market, but also the involvement and the impact in the Portuguese-speaking countries, which has enormous potential for investment and increase in trade relations", said Jorge Pais.

In statements to Lusa and RTP on the sidelines of the Mozambique-Portugal Business Forum, which takes place this afternoon at the Belém Cultural Center, in Lisbon, Jorge Pais added that "the development of Lusophone countries is a situation recognized internationally as of enormous importance for Portugal".

Asked about the sectors that would most easily be well received in Mozambique, the vice-president of AIP highlighted civil construction, tourism, the energy sector and infrastructures.

"Mozambique has 33 million inhabitants and in 10 years it will have 60, there will be a huge increase in the population, with the consequent housing needs, therefore it is a sector that will grow immensely and where Portuguese companies will be interested in being very attentive", he said.

The AIP official also stressed that tourism is a sector still little explored, "so tourism, hotels and restaurants are very important".

In addition to oil and gas, which are fundamental for the country's economic development in the coming years due to the large reserves, Jorge Pais highlighted other energy resources as particularly important for Portuguese companies in the context of the energy transition that African countries are trying to carry out.

"Technologies and the energy sector are other important areas, but there is also awareness about renewable energies, to combat the carbon footprint, and several companies, even in the consulting area, are interested in this sector which is a very important market, because companies (...) prefer to start with a country that speaks the same language and with whom we have this historical and cultural relationship", he concluded.
