Sporting 'avenges' Cup defeat, wins derby and puts pressure on Benfica

Sporting surprised this Sunday and won against Benfica. In the derby played in Alcochete, the team led by Mariana Cabral beat their Lisbon rivals by 3-1, in a game counting for the 19th round of the women's football championship.
In a derby that was decisive for the outcome of the competition, with three rounds to go, the home team knew they had more to lose than their opponents if they lost the derby. And after a somewhat lukewarm start, it was the home team who opened the scoring.
After a shot to the crossbar by Marie Alidou, the lionesses opened the scoring through Brittany Raphino with a precise shot in the 25th minute. Also in the first half, Joana Martins increased Sporting's advantage in Alcochete.
Filipa Patão made changes at half-time and Benfica reduced at the start of the second half. After a disallowed goal by Laís Araújo, captain Carole Costa reduced the distance by converting a penalty in the 53rd minute.
The goal gave the incarnates new life and Jéssica Silva was close to a great goal in the 64th minute. The forward scored a great lob goal, following a corner kick, but it was disallowed. The Portuguese international did not score, Sporting celebrated. In the 73rd minute, Olivia Smith set the final score in Alcochete.
After the math, Sporting, who avenged their defeat in the Portuguese Cup, remain in second place with 45 points. Benfica are leaders with 47 points.
