Greek authorities announced Tuesday the end of physical tickets for soccer games, amid escalating violence that has plagued the sport for years.

From now on, fans who want to attend a match in person will have to show a government-issued QR code on their mobile phone so they can be identified if there is trouble, the Associated Press reported.

Stadiums in the country have been closed to the public for the past two months following the death of a policeman who was hit by a flare during clashes between fans of Olympiacos and Panathinaikos.

"The aim is also to relieve Greek police from having to deploy hundreds of officers to stadiums. There will be no need for police presence at stadium entrances,” said Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou.
