"Today, April 8, 2024, I finally said yes to representing my second nationality, a country that [has] opened all the doors and more for me since the first day", he wrote, in a post on the social network Instagram.

The tennis player, born in Porto, reveals that the Morelos challenger, in Mexico, will be his "last with the Portuguese flag".

"Unfortunately, they didn't let me do everything I wanted for you. I couldn't represent you in team competitions, or in the Tokyo Olympics, for reasons that I still can't fully understand", he lamented.

Gonçalo Oliveira, 29, currently occupies the 231st place in the world and managed to enter the top 200 in 2017, when, on December 25, he reached his best position in the ATP ranking, in 194th place.

In Tokyo2020, which took place in 2021, Portugal was represented by João Sousa and Pedro Sousa, qualified by ranking, at a time when they were at the door of the top 100, while Gonçalo Oliveira was just inside the top 300 in singles and was among the top 100 in pairs.

"Today, a beautiful stage of my professional career began. I want to thank all the support, affection and messages received by my new companions and friends [...]. I promise to work daily to obtain the best results and represent Venezuela in the biggest tournaments of our dear sport", he wrote.

Gonçalo Oliveira has never managed to enter a main draw of an ATP tournament in singles, although he has two semi-finals in pairs.
