Bayern Munich could move to sack Thomas Tuchel in the coming hours after a shock 3-2 defeat at Heidenheim left them 16 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

That is the opinion of Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus, who believes the team need a "new face" in the dugout in time for Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg at Arsenal.

"There is always something to salvage, but I think the relationship between Thomas Tuchel and the team is broken. If you are 2-0 up at Heidenheim, you cannot throw it away, especially with the Champions League coming up," he said.

"The chemistry is not right any more. I am excited to see what happens at Bayern in the next 24 hours. I could even imagine them going with a caretaker coach," added Matthaus, now a pundit for German broadcaster Sky Sport.

"The poor performance last weekend against Borussia Dortmund and the result today show that. Thomas Tuchel does not get through to the team any more, he gives strange press conferences and makes strange statements."
