Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko has said he would leave Arsenal to fight for Ukraine if called up, in an extensive interview with BBC Newsnight.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky this week signed a bill into law reducing the age of military conscription from 27 to 25, in a bid to bolster the number of troops fighting against Russia in the ongoing war, which has lasted more than two years. Zinchenko said he would be ready to do so.

"I think it's a clear answer. I would go [to fight]. It's hard to even think about that, because just a few years ago we were in the same school, we were playing together in the playground or on the football pitch, and now they have to defend our country. And honestly, it's so hard to accept, but it is what it is. We cannot give up," the Arsenal left-back said.

"I know some people can think it's much easier for me to be here [in London] than there [in Ukraine]. I really hope this war is going to finish soon," the Arsenal star continued.

"Since the invasion, very few [have messaged me], but I stopped communicating since February 2022. They sent me a few messages and I cannot blame them because it's not their fault. I cannot say to them: 'Guys, go outside and do protests and all this stuff', because I know they can be [put] in jail. But I have a question for Russian people: how do you live in a country where there is no freedom of speech? We will never forget what they did to us, what they did to our people. And that's what I will also teach my kids. And my kids will teach their kids. This is not acceptable," the Ukraine international added.

"What is my duty now? How can I help as much as I can my country, my people and all this stuff? I cannot be more proud than I am right now to be Ukrainian. I have a dream that this war is going to finish very, very soon, and we are going to rebuild our Ukraine how we really want it," he concluded.
