"It is always frustrating when we are not up to the standard of reception and this is the case with the Mona Lisa. So we are reflecting, with the Ministry of Culture, on this improvement which seems necessary to me today," she added.
It is "80% of visitors to the Louvre [nearly nine million in total in 2023], so more than 20,000 visitors [who] see the Mona Lisa every day" and take selfies in front of it with their mobile phones, she said.
The Mona Lisa, a world-famous painting, is on display in the Salle des États, the museum's largest, opposite the Louvre's largest painting, Veronese's The Wedding at Cana, and alongside paintings by the great Venetian masters of the 16th century.
The official also recalled that a limit of 30,000 visitors per day had been introduced, which will be maintained during the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.
