The concert "Zeca Afonso: Bigger than thought", a unique celebration of the last concert of José Afonso's career, also marks the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, of which "Grândola, Vila Morena" became a symbol, having been one of the passwords that set 25 April 1974 in motion.

Scheduled for 29 June, at 9 pm, the concert brings to the Coliseu musicians who were on this stage with José Afonso for the last time, names linked to him and voices known to the general public, who will sing some of the most iconic songs by the author of "Traz Outro Amigo Também", revealed the Coliseu today.

The first part will be ensured by historical names such as Francisco Fanhais, Júlio Pereira, Janita Salomé, Rui Pato, Octávio Sérgio, Nuno Oliveira, João Afonso and the Sociedade Musical Fraternidade Operária Grandolense, to interpret, among others, the themes of the album "Cantigas do Maio", released in 1971, which includes songs such as "Grândola, vila morena" and "Maio, maduro maio", and which would help change the path of Portuguese music forever.

The second part will bring together six singers from different generations and musical families to sing some of José Afonso's most striking songs, and who will show on stage their connection to Zeca's legacy, with new arrangements and artistic direction by musician Pedro Vidal.

The first names revealed are Jorge Palma, Teresa Salgueiro and B Fachada, the remaining three will be announced in the "coming days".

"We intend to celebrate the life and work of Zeca Afonso, through a unique show with the presence of six reference artists who will pay tribute to those who gave so much to their and our lives, and to Portuguese music, whose names we will reveal in the coming days", explains Miguel Guedes, president of the Coliseu, in a statement.

It is also with "great honour that we will gather the historical musicians who accompanied him on that memorable night, bringing them all to the stage, recreating their memories", in a concert hall that "praises and keeps alive the ideals of struggle, freedom and hope that José Afonso immortalised in his music", he adds.

On 25 May 1983, José Afonso went on stage for the last time, at the Coliseu in the city of Porto, surrounded by many friends.

"Tickets sold out months in advance, such was the desire to pay homage to one of the fundamental names in Portuguese music and a symbol of the resistance for Democracy. The only images publicly known are those of the show at the Coliseu dos Recreios, five months earlier. But the last concert, held in Porto 40 years ago, continues to echo in the memory of many", he says.

Tickets for the concert "Zeca Afonso: Bigger than thought" were symbolically put on sale on Thursday, 25 April, cost between 12 and 25 euros and are available at the ticket office of Coliseu Porto Ageas, coliseu.pt, Ticketline and usual places.
