WhatsApp admits the possibility of leaving India if the country's government requires it to compromise the app's encryption, which would jeopardize users' security and privacy.
The news is being reported by Livemint (via Android Headlines) and indicates that WhatsApp's position was conveyed to a court in India.
“As a platform, we are saying that if we are required to compromise encryption, then WhatsApp will go”, a WhatsApp representative is said to have said, reinforcing the idea that, if it did, users would lose confidence in the platform.
It is worth remembering that India is one of WhatsApp's main markets, so it would be a serious 'blow' to Meta's application if it were forced to leave the country. Of the 2.78 billion WhatsApp users worldwide, 535.8 million people are in India. In second place is Brazil with 'only' 148 million users.
