The U.S. House of Representatives has again voted to advance legislation that could ban TikTok in the United States, as lawmakers aim to divest the platform from Chinese company ByteDance and force a sale to an American company. This marks the second time this year that the House has passed the legislation. The first time was back in March , and this revised version includes some changes, CNN reports. Unlike the first version of the bill — which gave ByteDance a six-month deadline to sell TikTok — this version extends that deadline to nine months. The White House could also extend the deadline by 90 days if needed, but only if it believes there’s been substantial progress toward a sale. Another important factor to consider is that the TikTok provision has been bundled with other must-pass foreign aid measures — including aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. While it’s possible that the TikTok provision could be stripped from the package, the fact that the aid measures are a high priority for Congress makes that unlikely. If the package passes Congress, the TikTok provision will then head to President Joe Biden’s desk, where he has said he’s likely to sign it into law. Read Also: TikTok.
