"Nuno (fictitious name) was left by his biological parents with a neighboring couple wrapped in a plastic bag that replaced his diaper. He had a mark under his left eye, a sign of a cigarette burn that almost blinded him. He was only five months old", we can read in the message posted on Facebook last Saturday.
'Nuno' is "the son of a drug-addicted father and a mother who was absent to prostitute herself", and he started to have "his health needs met at the Hospital de Santa Maria".
"It was here", the note continues, "that the family that took him in found support to move forward in the process that would guarantee his custody and safety, through the Núcleo de Apoio à Criança e Jovens (NACJ) of Santa Maria and the IAC - Instituto de Apoio à Criança".
Although it does not indicate when this situation occurred, the Hospital de Santa Maria reveals that, "today", 'Nuno' "lives with his new parents, who traded the plastic bag for a diaper and the cigarette burns for love".
The post on Facebook ends by stating that "this was the case with which Ana Perdigão, a lawyer from the IAC, concluded, on Friday, her conference 'The centers: The guardians of health in the protection system', an event organized by the Núcleo de Apoio à Criança e ao Jovem do Hospital de Santa Maria (HSM) / ULS Santa Maria to mark the month of prevention of child abuse".
Created in 1990, the Núcleo de Santa Maria "was a pioneer" in Portugal. In 2023, 258 cases were reported to the NACJ.
