SIM regrets announcement of resignation of SNS executive director
The Independent Doctors' Union (SIM) today lamented the announcement of the resignation of the executive director of the National Health Service (SNS), Fernando Araújo, noting that "a new restructuring" of the SNS "may be at stake".

"The structural reforms in the NHS should be maintained, the technical structures and institutions should do their job regardless of the political color of the Government", said, in a reaction to Lusa, the general secretary of SIM, Nuno Rodrigues, adding that "there is a joint path that was being followed and that may be interrupted".
Fernando Araújo announced today that he will present his resignation, together with his team, to the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, claiming that he does not want to be an obstacle to the Government in the policies and measures it deems necessary.
"Respecting the principle of institutional loyalty, I will present to the Minister of Health, together with the team I lead, the request for resignation from the position of executive director of the National Health Service", says Fernando Araújo in a statement.
According to Fernando Araújo, this "difficult decision" will allow the new guardianship to "execute the policies and measures it deems necessary, with the required speed, preventing the current executive management of the NHS from being considered an obstacle to its implementation".
For the general secretary of SIM, Nuno Rodrigues, "when people are not well in a position they should leave".
SIM hopes that whoever succeeds Fernando Araújo - "a respected, respected and competent person" - will be able to "also address the problems of the NHS and work with the unions to solve the problems that persist".
The executive management of the NHS started its activity on January 1, 2023, following the new Statute of the National Health Service proposed by the then Minister Marta Temido, with the aim of coordinating the assistance response of all NHS units and modernizing its management.
In January last year, a new phase of the organizational reform of the NHS started, with the extension to the whole country of the Local Health Units and the generalization of the Family Health Units of model B, based on a productivity incentive scheme.
