In statements to journalists, at a press conference called to announce that the Lisbon post is the first abroad to issue the new Brazilian passport, Ambassador Wladimir Valler Filho said that there are "450 Brazilian prisoners in Portugal", adding that most of these citizens are imprisoned for issues related to drug trafficking.

Two thirds of the detainees are men and one third are women, said the diplomat, emphasizing, however, that the number of Brazilian women in detention has been increasing due to connections to drug trafficking.

"For this crime, the number of women is much higher than that of men and has been increasing," he said.

But, according to the ambassador, there are also many requests for support to the consulate because "there are many cases of minors, due to separation of spouses".

However, "cases of domestic violence against women have decreased", he stressed, emphasizing that "there has been a very significant decrease in these cases".

From the community that has been living in Portugal for a long time, the consulate has also been receiving several requests for assistance, as well as from people who want to return to the country, added Wladimir Valler Filho.
