The Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, stressed this Saturday that the government intends to reach "the necessary and possible consensuses" with the medical unions, with whom it will hold the first negotiation meeting on April 26.

"We are not starting the union negotiations with a limit; it would not be appropriate. We are starting by listening to the needs and demands of the professional classes. The professional classes in health are diverse and we are very committed to finding points of agreement," said the official, in statements to journalists.

The official also stressed that her purpose is to convey "a guarantee of dialogue and to reach the necessary and possible consensuses".

"We want to know, we want to understand the specifications, we want to understand how far we can go and give the unions the guarantee that everything we are going to do [will be done] with the greatest transparency and loyalty," she added.

Ana Paula Martins also pointed out that "mental and psychological health is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Health and this Government", having stressed that the meetings with the professional associations will start on Monday, "even before the union negotiations".

"We really want to talk about the issue of psychology consultations and their due integration into what is the national mental health program itself, which is at a very good pace and has a project that has already started and will continue until the end of 2026," she said.

It is recalled that, on Thursday, the minister announced that she had already contacted the medical and nursing unions to start negotiations.

Emphasizing that she would not make any comment on the unions' specifications, the minister added only that she would talk to and listen to the union structures, to understand their arguments.

"The dialogue is done in both ways, therefore, it is very important to listen to the unions, to understand that they certainly bring us information from the field about what the professionals are experiencing and that is why we are here, to integrate what are their suggestions," she concluded.
