Most respondents to the survey 'The Portuguese and the 25th of April' do not explicitly reject forms of government incompatible with participatory democracy, said today Filipa Madeira, co-author of the work, presented in Lisbon.

"We noticed that only 23% disagree with a technocratic vision, that is, they disagree that experts should make important decisions", said the researcher from the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon.

"Still, only 43% disagree with the idea of a strong leader", she added, referring to the answers to the question "Would it be preferable to have a strong leader who did not have to worry about parliament or elections?".

To this question, about 34% said they agree with the idea of a strong leader. "If we also consider the 17% who neither agree nor disagree, we can conclude that this majority does not reject, unequivocally, ideas that are incompatible with the democratic system", she justified.

According to Filipa Madeira, this data is not new. "They are similar to others found in European studies from 2017 and 2019, which already showed that in Portugal, compared to other European countries, there is greater tolerance for these non-democratic forms of government", she said.

Despite this expression, the authors of the study concluded that there is an increase in satisfaction with democracy, on the one hand, and a decrease, compared to 2004 and 2014, of those who say they are not at all satisfied with democracy.

Those who say they are more satisfied with democracy in Portugal are mainly the youngest, the most educated and those who live more comfortably.

The study coordinator, Pedro Magalhães, said during the presentation that the team intends to work more on the data.

"We are not dealing with facts, we are dealing with perceptions", he specified.

The work was developed by a team from the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon and ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, in partnership with the 50th Anniversary of the 25th of April Commemorative Commission.

The commissioner of the commemorations, historian Maria Inácia Rezola stressed, on the other hand, that democracy continues to be the preferred system of the Portuguese.

The analysis of the survey results revealed that 65% of respondents chose the 25th of April 1974 as the most important event in Portuguese history.
