Google 'trap': One of the most wanted drug traffickers has been in Lisbon
One of the world’s most wanted drug lords, whose cartel is believed to be behind dozens of murders, has been ‘outed’ by his digital footprint. For the past five years, Christopher Vincent Kinahan has been leaving Google reviews of places he has visited, revealing that the head of the Irish Kinahan cartel has been not only in Dubai, where he is believed to be based, but also Spain, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Belgium and even Portugal. Authorities believe that Christopher Vincent Kinahan and his two sons, who are also wanted by the United States with a $15 million (€13,842,075) reward for information leading to their arrest, are based in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. However, the country has so far refused to extradite the trio. The cartel boss, who is believed to have amassed a fortune of more than $1 billion (€922,900,000) through drug trafficking, arms dealing and money laundering, has reportedly tried to reinvent himself in recent years by using just his first and middle names. It was through this alias that Bellingcat and The Sunday Times were able to unmask Christopher Vincent’s digital footprint, which shows he has been posting Google reviews of places he has visited since 2019. Although no locations outside the UAE have been posted since the US issued an alert in 2022, Kinahan has been travelling extensively in recent years – including to Portugal. It all began with a three-star review of the Bareburger City Walk restaurant in Dubai, in the shadow of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in 2019. Since then, the drug lord has posted 221 reviews, the most recent of which was on March 29, 2023, according to Bellingcat. According to the outlet, Kinahan has posted 102 reviews of locations in the UAE, 45 in Spain, 28 in Zimbabwe, 16 in South Africa and 14 in Turkey. He has also visited Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Hungary, Egypt, Belgium and Portugal, where he has reviewed at least three locations in Lisbon. According to his profile, the Irishman visited The Corner Irish Pub two years ago, giving it a three-star rating. The Hotel Avenida Palace was awarded not only five stars but also a glowing review: “Perfect location accommodation right beside the train station and literally 60 metres from the metro. Excellent staff and very good service.” Kinahan also left a lengthy review of the Tapas n’ Friends Trindade restaurant, whose staff he said were “friendly and helpful.” “Very good service. I visited this restaurant on three occasions during my stay in Lisbon. One negative was that on one of the nights they had run out of several choices on the menu. However I would recommend this restaurant which is situated on the Rua da Trindade in the Edificio Masonico. A special mention to the young Nepalese girl (Sujata) who served us, she was very attentive and a credit to your business. Apart from the lack of some menu choices it deserves a 4.5 star rating,” he wrote. Kinahan, who is known as ‘The Dapper Don’ because of his sharp dressing, was jailed several times between 1986 and 1997 for drug trafficking and money laundering offences. His cartel is also believed to be behind at least 20 murders, according to a report by Europol in 2022. His two sons, Daniel and Christopher Jr, are also key players in the operation, according to the US Treasury Department. Daniel is said to be the most important because of his position in the boxing world. In 2016, a botched attempt to murder the Irishman sparked a feud between the Kinahans and the rival Hutch gang that led to at least 18 deaths. Kinahan, who had been based in southern Spain at the time, is believed to have relocated to Dubai in the aftermath.
