Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested on Saturday that Russia had targeted his country's energy sector and hit gas facilities that are critical for supplies to the European Union.

"The main target was the energy sector - a number of enterprises in the industry, both electricity and gas transmission facilities - in particular, those gas transmission facilities that are critical for maintaining a stable gas supply to European consumers," Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address, according to Reuters.

Zelenskyy, who has been appealing to international partners to supply his country with defensive weapons systems, also said Ukrainian forces had "managed to shoot down some" of the 34 Russian missiles of various types.

The Ukrainian president did not specify which particular facilities he was referring to, nor whether they had been hit by Russian missiles. However, Ukraine's state oil and gas company Naftogaz said Russia had struck its facilities, but that no one had been hurt and supplies to Ukrainian consumers and clients had not been affected.

Maksym Kozytskyi, governor of the Lviv region, which borders Poland, also reported that his region had been hit by cruise and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, though Ukrainian forces had shot down three missiles.

According to the governor, two critical energy infrastructure facilities in the Stryi and Chervonohrad districts were damaged and caught fire, but the blazes were quickly extinguished.

Russia continues to supply gas to the EU via Ukraine under a transit deal with Russia's Gazprom that expires in December. Ukraine's energy minister said last month that Kyiv had no plans to extend or replace the agreement with Moscow, which pays Ukraine to ship its gas to the EU.
