"The humanitarian issue of releasing the ship's crew is of serious concern for us," Hosein Amir Abdolahian said during a phone conversation with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, Iran's official news agency IRNA reported on Friday.
Lusa tried to confirm this information with the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, awaiting a response. The Iranian diplomacy chief said he had provided consular access to the 25 crew members of the cargo ship and added that they are expected to be released. Iran seized the Israeli-linked vessel as it was expected to respond to the April 1 attack on its consulate in Syria, blamed on Tel Aviv, which killed seven members of the Revolutionary Guard, including three generals. Hours after the seizure of the container ship, Tehran launched a retaliation offensive with hundreds of missiles and drones against Israeli territory. Tehran regularly seizes oil tankers and cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. On January 11, another ship was boarded in the Sea of Oman and taken to Iranian waters.
