The doctor who was treating newborn Sabreen al-Rouh, the baby girl delivered from her mother who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, said she “joined her family as a martyr.”

The infant had respiratory distress and a weak immune system since birth, the head of the emergency neonatal unit at the Emirati Hospital told Reuters.

"I and other doctors tried to save her, but she passed away. For me, personally, it was a very difficult and painful day. She was born while her respiratory system was not mature and her immune system was very weak, which led to her death. She joined her family as a martyr,” said Mohammad Salama.

The child — who was delivered by emergency cesarean section at 30 weeks gestation and weighed 1.4 kilograms (3.1 pounds) — was to be raised by her maternal grandmother, Mirvat al-Sakani.

"The grandmother asked me and the doctors to take care of her, because she would be someone who would keep the memory of her mother, father and sister alive, but it was God’s will that she die,” Salama added.

The girl’s mother was killed in one of several Israeli airstrikes that hit the southern Gaza city of Rafah late Saturday, killing 13 people, including nine children.

The pregnant woman, Sabreen Al-Sheikh, was killed along with her husband Shokri and their daughter Malak. Now, the daughter Sabreen has been laid to rest beside them.
