"We are mobilizing 47 million euros this year alone," Louis Michel told the press after a meeting with Benin's Head of State, Patrice Talon.
This amount will be used in particular "for the acquisition of drones and intelligence aircraft," as well as for "security and counter-terrorism equipment and materials," he added.
The day before, he was in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where he also affirmed the European Union's commitment to the fight against terrorism.
In recent years, the northern regions of Benin, Togo and Ghana have been the target of attacks and incursions by fighters from the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda groups, which are flourishing in the Sahel and seeking to spread south.
The northern border region with Burkina Faso remains the epicenter of attacks in Benin. The border with Niger has also recently become a source of concern, especially since the overthrow of Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum by the military in July 2023.
In response to the threats, Benin launched Operation Mirador in January 2022, a deployment of some 3,000 troops to secure the country's borders. A few months ago, it began recruiting an additional 5,000 soldiers to beef up security in the north of the country.
Beninese authorities, who rarely communicate about these attacks, reported in April 2023 that there had been some 20 cross-border incursions since 2021.
