Recent fighting between combatants from the Tigray and Amhara regions has flared in the town of Alamata and surrounding districts, areas in the Raya zone that are claimed by both regions.

On Monday, the UN humanitarian agency (OCHA) estimated that more than 50,000 civilians had been displaced by the fighting in the region, which has a long history of such conflict.

The chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, is "following with deep concern the escalation of tensions between communities" and calls on "all parties to cease hostilities," the AU said in a statement on Tuesday.

The exact identities of the combatants involved in the latest fighting remain unclear, and the situation on the ground is difficult to verify as authorities have restricted access to the area.

Attached to Tigray administratively in the 1990s, the areas of Raya (southern Tigray) and Wolkait (western Tigray) have been claimed for decades by the Amhara ethnic group.

Under a peace deal signed between the federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) in November 2022 in Pretoria, Amhara forces were to withdraw.

Moussa Faki "calls for the respect and implementation" of the Pretoria agreement and for "political dialogue" to "resolve the issues of the disputed territories."

Several embassies in Ethiopia, including those of France, the UK, Germany and the US, have expressed concern over "reports of violence in contested areas of northern Ethiopia," calling for "de-escalation" and "protection of civilians."
