On Wednesday, the announcement by a Madrid court that it was opening a "preliminary investigation" led Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to state that he is considering resigning, promising to make a public statement about his future on Monday.

The judicial investigation into Pedro Sánchez's wife, Begoña Gómez, is the result of a complaint for alleged influence peddling filed by the association "Clean Hands", which is associated with the Spanish far right.

The association said today that the complaint it filed earlier this month is based on content from digital media and comments on television programs.

While admitting that the allegations could be false, the association said that the responsibility lies with the media outlets that published them and that, in any case, the judicial investigation should serve to determine their veracity.

Today, the Public Prosecutor's Office ruled in favor of dismissing the case and asked the investigating judge to do the same, according to sources cited by several Spanish media outlets.

The prosecutors argued that there is no evidence of a crime that would justify opening a criminal proceeding, according to the EFE news agency, which cites sources familiar with the case.

The investigation concerns alleged connections between Begoña Gómez and private companies, such as the airline Air Europa, which received public support during the pandemic crisis or signed contracts with the State when Sánchez was already Prime Minister.

In a text published on the social network X, Sánchez attributed the judicial investigation involving his wife to a campaign of persecution by the right and the far right, fueled by the Popular Party (PP) and Vox.

The Socialist Prime Minister, in office since 2018, said he needed to "stop and reflect" to answer the question of whether he should and whether it is worth continuing to lead the Government "despite the quagmire that the right and the far right intend to transform politics into".

Sánchez said that he and his wife have been victims of the PP and Vox's "mud machine" for months and accused the two parties of "an operation of harassment and personal destruction" because they do not accept the results of the last elections and realized that "the political attack would not be enough".

The PP and Vox accused him of playing the victim and putting on "a show" that embarrasses Spain internationally to divert attention from several suspicions of corruption, instead of providing clarifications.

In addition to this suspicion involving his wife, Sánchez has been attacked because of a judicial investigation into an advisor to a former Socialist minister who allegedly charged illegal commissions for selling masks during the pandemic to public entities, including regional governments then in the hands of the PSOE.

This case led to the creation of parliamentary commissions of inquiry, supported by the Socialists, on the purchase of medical supplies by public administrations during the COVID-19 crisis. The work of these commissions began this week.

Since he admitted the possibility of resigning, Sánchez has received the support of the parties of the parliamentary 'geringonça' that enabled his current government last November and who asked him not to resign.

There is also mobilization of PSOE leaders and structures, with public demonstrations of support for the Prime Minister and calls for demonstrations on Saturday.
