"The heavy rains linked to the El Niño phenomenon" have caused "significant damage" in several regions of the country, highlighted Kassim Majaliwa, adding that 155 people have died.
However, the prime minister did not specify when these deaths occurred.
According to the data provided by the government official, more than 51,000 homes and 200,000 people have been affected.
The number of injured people is 236.
"I strongly urge citizens to be patient [...], especially on the roads, in order to avoid accidents", he said.
In December, at least 88 people had already died in Tanzania as a result of floods and landslides.
Since October 2023, heavy rains in East Africa have caused hundreds of deaths in countries such as Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.
The El Niño weather phenomenon is characterized by rising temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.
