Charles Michel celebrates 25th of April that started the transition to democracy

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, today joined the Portuguese in the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of April 25, stressing that the revolution began the country's transition to democracy.

In a message posted on his account on social network X, Michel wrote, in Portuguese and English, that "50 years ago today, a peaceful revolution paved the way for Portugal's transition to democracy".

"We join the Portuguese people today in commemorating the Carnation Revolution," added the leader of the European Council, the body that brings together the heads of state with executive and government power in the European Union.

Portugal is celebrating the 50th anniversary of April 25 today, when a group of military officers from the Armed Forces Movement overthrew the Estado Novo regime, initiating the country's transition to democracy.
