According to the CFL technical administrator, who spoke today to Rádio Nacional de Angola, vandalism of railway infrastructure has reached worrying levels.

Manuel Lourenço reported that vandalism on the railway line also extends to stations under construction, such as the one at Luanda's New International Airport, where televisions and bathroom fixtures were not spared.

The official also pointed to the municipality of Viana, one of the most populous in the Angolan capital, as the district with the highest rate of acts of vandalism against railway infrastructure, which cause security problems.

The Angolan railway network is divided between the CFL, Caminhos de Ferro de Benguela and Caminhos de Ferro de Moçâmedes.

Vandalism of public property has been a practice repeatedly denounced by the Angolan authorities, warning of the socioeconomic losses.

On Monday, the Angolan government announced a proposed law to criminalize acts of vandalism of public goods and services, in view of the high losses they represent for the public purse, with a penalty of up to 15 years in prison. The law will be submitted to the National Assembly (parliament) for consideration.

According to the Angolan government, acts of vandalism jeopardize the sustainability of public investment made.
