The alliance was created by the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) of the EU executive, in collaboration with the Belgian six-month presidency of the EU Council, on the sidelines of the informal meeting of the bloc's health ministers, which was attended by Ana Paula Martins.

The objectives are to work towards strengthening the security of supply, reinforcing the availability of medicines and reducing the dependencies of the EU supply chain.

The alliance, announced in October 2023, already has 250 registered members, public and private, bringing together national authorities, industry, health care organisations, civil society representatives, the Commission and EU agencies.

Speaking at the launch of the alliance, the European Commissioner for Health, Stella Kyriakides, said that the EU has recorded "vulnerabilities in supply chains, which are causing periodic shortages in all Member States".

"We have to anticipate other possible disruptions in the future, strengthen our strategic autonomy and, at the same time, ensure diversified supply chains", she recommended.

Stressing that, with this initiative, the EU wants to address "the industrial dimension of the shortage", the Commissioner added that "all relevant stakeholders" are gathered to solve the problem.

The Alliance for Critical Medicines is part of the measures aimed at building a European Health Union.
