The case happened in Australia and is causing a lot of controversy. The comedian guarantees that the request had nothing to do with breastfeeding, but rather with the noise that the baby was making.

American comedian Arj Barker has kicked a mother breastfeeding her seven-month-old baby out of a show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in Australia.

The funnyman’s actions have sparked controversy, with many slamming him and suggesting his decision was based on the woman breastfeeding in public.

Arj has since defended his actions. Speaking to the ABC , the comedian said the baby’s noises were distracting his train of thought. “On behalf of the other 700 people that had paid to see the show I politely said to her that the baby couldn’t be there,” he explained, rejecting suggestions his decision was based on anything other than noise.

“I have nothing against babies. First of all, the breastfeeding thing is a non-issue. I had no idea she was breastfeeding,” he said, adding the theatre’s bright lights meant he couldn’t see the audience.

In a show of solidarity with Trish Faranda and her daughter Clara, several audience members reportedly walked out.

According to CNN Australia , the woman told local media she initially thought the comedian was joking.

“‘Is there a baby here? I speak fluent baby and the baby is saying, ‘Get me the f*** out of here’,” the comedian allegedly said, with Trish admitting she initially laughed along, not realising Arj was serious, as her daughter wasn’t crying or screaming and she was actually breastfeeding her to keep her calm.

When she realised the comedian was serious about wanting her to leave, Trish got up and walked out. “I didn’t want to ruin anyone else’s night, I didn’t want to make a scene or a fuss,” she told Seven News , revealing she felt humiliated.

The incident has sparked a fierce debate in Australia about the rights of mothers to take their babies wherever they like and the rights of performers to refuse entry to babies at their shows.

The festival has since said “babies in arms are generally permitted, however we ask that families sit towards the back of the venue so they can make a quick and easy exit should their baby become noisy and disruptive to the performer and other patrons”.
