NGOs sue former Frontex director who is running for Le Pen's party
The Human Rights League and the migrant aid association Utopia 56 filed a complaint today for complicity in crimes against humanity and torture against Fabrice Leggeri, a candidate for the French far right in the European elections.

France, 23 Apr 2024 (Lusa) -- The Human Rights League and the migrant aid association Utopia 56 today filed a complaint for complicity in crimes against humanity and torture against Fabrice Leggeri, a candidate for the French far right in the European elections.
Liggeri was director of Frontex, the European Union agency responsible for borders.
The two non-governmental organizations (NGOs), which filed the complaint with the Paris judicial court, believe that the EU agency responsible for border control played "an essential role in the practice of crimes against humanity in the Mediterranean", the "deadliest migration route in the world", under Leggeri's leadership.
"To assert the agency's policing role, the director then chose a policy designed to make it difficult, at all costs, including human lives, for migrants to enter the EU," they said.
The two NGOs accuse Leggeri, director of Frontex from 2015 to 2022, of having "allowed the perpetuation of criminal acts" of which he was aware.
Questioned by the newspaper Le Monde, the number three on the list of Marine Le Pen's party (RN), dismissed the accusations, classifying them as "incorrect allegations" aimed at discrediting the list to which he belongs.
Faced with the accusations, the RN quickly expressed support for the candidate in the 9 June elections.
"The far-left associations, supporters of migratory submission and accomplices of the smugglers, want to silence those who defend the principle of border control," wrote Marine Le Pen on the social network X.
"His only 'crime' is to refuse the migratory submersion of the European continent," denounced, for his part, the head of the RN list, Jordan Bardella.
