Sweden accused the Russian government today of espionage through the so-called "ghost fleet", made up of old Russian oil tankers with anonymous ownership and with which Moscow seeks to circumvent the sanctions imposed internationally.

Speaking to Swedish television channel SVT, the commander of the Swedish Navy, Rear Admiral Eva Skoog Haslum, confirmed that Swedish forces are monitoring the movements of these Russian-linked vessels, which are transporting thousands of tons of crude oil through the Baltic Sea every day.
Haslum said the military has received indications that some of these vessels are being used for radio reconnaissance and communications interception.
"We have found antennas that do not belong on, for example, fishing vessels, so it is obvious that these movements must often seek other purposes than those apparent," she explained.
In this sense, she stressed that this type of "trickery" endangers the international community and constitutes a problem "both in terms of security and the environment", although she did not rule out that some of these ships could be used as part of "hybrid operations" that could lead them to Swedish ports under the pretext of refueling or maintenance.
However, she assured that the Swedish authorities have an "action plan" in place in case the aim of these incursions into Swedish ports involves "sabotage" of these ships.
Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom confirmed that there is a "broad consensus" in the European Union that Russia's "ghost fleet" is a "problem".
