A father is suing UK oil giant BP over the death of his 21-year-old son.

Hussein Julood alleges gas flaring at a BP-operated oil field in Iraq gave his son leukaemia.

A 2022 BBC investigation found the family's village of Rumaila had high levels of cancer-causing pollutants known to come from gas flaring.

The father's legal claim says his son Ali developed leukaemia from toxic emissions from the Rumaila oil field and died last year.

It is the first time an individual has taken legal action against a major oil company over its flaring practices, according to the BBC.

Mr Julood is seeking damages for the cost of his son's medical treatment - including chemotherapy abroad and bone marrow transplants - loss of earnings, funeral expenses and the "moral loss" of his son.

"I just hope that whoever hears my voice in BP will look at my situation. I am not only representing myself, I am representing the poor people who live here and who are suffering from the pollution," Hussein Julood told BBC News.

The Rumaila region has some of the highest levels of gas flaring in the world, according to the World Bank.
