The suspect, identified only as Jian G. in line with German privacy rules, was detained on Monday in the city of Dresden, prosecutors said in a statement.

The German public prosecutor's office did not name the MEP Jian G. is alleged to have worked for since 2019.

However, German magazine Der Spiegel reported that it is far-right MEP Maximilian Krah of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, who is the party's lead candidate for the European Parliament elections scheduled for early June.

Jian G. is accused of working for Chinese intelligence and of having repeatedly passed on information about negotiations and decisions in the European Parliament since January. Prosecutors allege that the aide also spied on Chinese dissidents in Germany.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser on Tuesday called the arrest of the alleged Chinese spy "extremely serious" in a statement.

"If it is confirmed that Chinese intelligence spied on the European Parliament from within, that would be an attack on European democracy," Faeser said after news of the arrest broke.

"Anyone who employs such an employee also bears responsibility," the German minister added.

"This case must be fully clarified (...) all connections and backgrounds must be illuminated," Faeser said.

News of the arrest came a day after three Germans were detained in a separate case on suspicion of spying for China and arranging for the transfer of technology that could be used for military purposes.
