Niger's government, which emerged from a coup last July, denounced in March the existing military cooperation agreement with the United States, saying the American presence was now "illegal".

Last week, Washington finally agreed to withdraw its 1,000 or so troops from the country and announced that it was sending a delegation to Niamey to work out the details of the pullout.

"We can confirm that discussions between the United States and Niger have begun regarding an orderly withdrawal of U.S. forces from the country," Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said.

A "small team from the Pentagon and U.S. Africa Command" is taking part in the talks, he added.

The United States "will continue to explore options to ensure we can continue to address potential terrorist threats," he added.

In Niamey, Niger's Foreign Minister Bakari Yaou Sangare said in a statement that he had met with U.S. Ambassador to Niger Kathleen FitzGibbon on Tuesday to discuss "the issue of the departure of American military forces from Niger."

The meeting took place in the presence of Maria Barron, the head of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Niamey, who gave assurances that the agency would "continue its bilateral cooperation" with Niger, announcing "a new agreement to replace the current one, which expires in September 2024," the statement said.

The United States has a major drone base in Niger, near Agadez, which cost about $100 million to build.

After the putsch that toppled elected president Mohamed Bazoum in late July, the new military regime swiftly demanded the departure of troops from Niger's former colonial power France and has drawn closer to Russia, as have neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso, which are also ruled by military juntas and are battling jihadist insurgencies.
