The city of Milan is proposing a new law to ban the sale of ice cream after midnight in an effort to protect the "tranquility" of residents, in a move that would 'break' a popular part of Italian culture.
The city's local government has put forward a motion which, if approved, could see the late-night ice cream ban brought in "by mid-May" and would last until November, Sky News reports.
If passed, all takeaway food - including pizza, ice cream and drinks - would be banned after midnight in a bid to stop noisy groups congregating on the streets of Milan.
The city's deputy mayor, Marco Granelli, said: "The aim is to seek a balance between socialising and having fun and the peace and quiet of residents."
The measures would be in force from midnight on weekdays and from 1.30am at weekends and on public holidays.
It is not the first time that Milan has attempted to ban the sale of ice cream after midnight. In 2013, the city's then-mayor tried to bring in similar measures but they were met with fierce opposition from the public.
