"I think we won the second round (of local elections). We cannot stop!" Tusk said on social media X, as quoted by the Associated Press (AP) news agency on Monday.

Donald Tusk claimed victory in the second round of local elections on Sunday night, pointing to the numerous cities where candidates backed by his Civic Coalition won, including Krakow, Poznan, Wroclaw and Rzeszow.

The results put Tusk's centrist, pro-European Union party in a strong position ahead of the European Parliament elections on 9 June.

The run-off vote was held in 748 cities and towns where no candidate won more than 50% of the vote in the first round on 7 April.

Tusk's party candidates also regained control of cities they had not held for many years, including Zielona Gora, Legnica and Torun.

The local and regional elections were seen as a test for Tusk's pro-EU government four months after it took office.

Sunday's run-off vote strengthened the Tusk government's influence in cities, which should make it easier to cooperate on development projects and distribute EU funds.

Tusk's allies also won other cities in the first round two weeks ago, including Warsaw, where the incumbent mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, was re-elected by a wide margin.

In the first round, the main opposition party, the right-wing Law and Justice, won the most seats in the regional assemblies in the country's 16 provinces, taking 34.3% of the vote, while Tusk's Civic Coalition took 30.6%.

Law and Justice governed Poland as the central government from 2015-23.

Tusk's Civic Coalition traditionally has strong support in cities, while Law and Justice has a stronger base in conservative rural areas, particularly in eastern Poland.
